Which Telescope Should You Choose?
Which Type of Telescope Is Right For You?
The word telescope comes from the Greek word tele which stands for far away and skopein which stands for sight, a telescope brings far objects in close. Telescopes have were invented in the 1600's and every since then they've helped bring things a lot closer to us. There are a huge variety of telescopes on the market and they're used for a variety of reasons. I'll discuss the more popular ones here.
The Different Type of Telescopes
- Parabola shaped radio antennae are called Radio Telescopes. They are built from large groups of dishes that are made of a conductive wire mesh. As of 2005, the array sizes is many times larger than the width of the Earth.
- Optical telescopes focus light mainly from the visible end of the Electromagnetic Spectrum. These scopes increase the size and brightness of far away objects. These scopes employ mirrors or certain types of lenses to gather light and focus it. Binoculars are a good example.
- X-ray or Gamma-Ray telescopes have rays that go through many glasses and metals. The mirrors involved in these scopes are usually parabolic in shape. Gamma-ray scopes do not focus, they use a specific code to tell them what the shadows they are looking are. These scopes are usually found orbiting the earth.
- Refracting telescopes are the ones that are most common. They are usually made out of a long tube that has a piece of glass at one end and he eyepiece at the other. This is the type the pirates used when looking off the bow of their pirate ship. Arrr matey!
- Reflecting telescopes were developed by Isaac Newton. Where refracting telescopes used a lens, reflecting telescopes used a mirror to capture light that was placed in the very back of the telescope. These scopes offer a bigger view and bright wide view of comets and star clusters.
Now that you know the difference in telescopes, it's time you visit your local stores and trying out different telescopes to see which one fits your purpose best. You'll also be surprised at the varying of prices among telescopes. As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for!
