The Pros and Cons of Baitcasting Reels
Fishing, like any hobby, is most rewarding when you have all the necessary tools to maximize the experience. Where one rod and reel may shine, another may not, and it is important to have a wide array of equipment to choose from to enhance your enjoyment of the sport. When choosing your reels for fishing, you should have a knowledge of what sort of reel and rod are best used for the sort of fish you are looking to catch. Baitcasting reels are popular, and for good reason, but like all other reels, they have their place. They are the standard when it comes to bass fishing, but they have other applications as well.
While somewhat harder to use at first, many fishermen swear by the baitcasting reel being highly effective when used properly. They do tend to run a bit higher in price than many standard reels, but you do not need to pay an arm and a leg for a good quality one. This is not an area, however, on which you would want to skimp. Buying the cheapest reel you can find will inevitably lead down the path of headache eventually, so it is best to purchase a good reel from the beginning. Bearing this in mind, you can expect to pay around 70 for such a reel.
Fortunately, these reels are worth every penny if you are a prolific fisher. They handle heavier lines extremely well, which is part of the reason they are ideal for bass fishing, and their gearing allows for you to maximize your precise control when fighting a fish on your line, in addition to providing you with a precision cast. Their only downsides aside from the potential cost are that they are not designed for use with lighter lines, and no matter how proficient you are with such a reel, they will, eventually, leave you with backlash due to the precision required in controlling them.
Experienced fishers are used to these minor quirks, however, and the pros tend to far outweigh the cons. Consider looking into purchasing a good baitcasting reel to enhance your fishing arsenal.
