Consumer Reviews of TaxAct

TaxAct is a tax preparation software much like Turbo Tax. TaxAct operates much like the best tax preparation software out there. If you have simple tax forms or your tax records are very organized you may find that TaxAct is all the tax preparation software you need.

I've seen a number of consumer reviews for taxact that gave this software high remarks for it's ease of use, accuracy, installation guide and users manual. You can't say that about a lot of tax software out there now, but taxact seems to do what it says it will. Also, it won't cost you an arm and a leg like some other software out there. I can appreciate that since I live on a budget. I don't have the means to spend hundreds of dollars on software just to do my taxes. If I did, I'd just hire a professional to do them! And updating the software is a breeze as well. While it's not the most powerful tax preparation software on the market, I do believe it's the easiest to use and more powerful than a majority of people need. That makes it a winner in my book!

TaxAct is a no frills type of tax preparation software. It has easy and informative help, great review of your form, it's inexpensive and it has a preparation guidance feature which will help you immensely.

One of the downsides of TaxAct that I've seen in some consumer reviews of taxact is that you need to have a lot of screens open. I also don't like the fact that it doesn't have linked information and FAQ with questions and answers type of topics. I also don't like the fact that you cannot import W-2's and 1099's. This seems to be a problem with a lot of other tax preparation software, although many will claim it as a feature. Some programs you have to buy added addon widgets to get them to work properly. I've been told that it's a possibility that in future updates, taxact will have this feature. This will surely help sales as well as make us all sleep a little better at night.

As with any tax preparation software, whether a stand alone software program or online tax preparation, you should spend time getting use to this program and its features and drawbacks.

I personally like the wide range of free government e-filings that come with taxact. Like some other software, taxact will not charge you for this feature. I've seen this brought up in more than one review of taxact on the Internet, but according to the people I've talked to who use it, they don't seem to realize this program has this feature. Either that or it just doesn't concern them enough to take the time to learn how to use it. They could be leaving money on the table by not taking advantage of this!

You should also have some semblence of understanding how your taxes are suppose to look. Just in case the tax preparation software you're using messes up. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have it doubled checked by a professional tax preparer prior to sending it to the IRS or the State, at least for the first few years!

This is where a lot of people get it wrong. Many of the consumer reviews of taxact I saw commented on how accurate the software program is, but it's not perfect, just like your tax preparer. You need to look it over and check it for errors. If you don't have a clue, then pull out last years returns and compare them. Unless you've had some major changes in your income or tax status, it should be close. Things such as expenses and income should be pretty close to normal. It's as easy as this and it's no wonder more people don't get into trouble. All it takes is a few minutes looking over your tax returns to make sure there are no glaring mistakes. You could even have a tax preparation expert look at it for a minimal fee.

The advantages of software like TaxAct is that it can walk you through the tax preparation side of filing taxes with ease. Not all tax preparation software is created equal, we're trying to show you the differences with this series of reviews on the top tax preparation software.

But that doesn't mean you have to hurry through your taxes. This is where a lot of people make mistakes. They get in a hurry and forget to hit the right button. Yeah, it has error features like other tax preparation software, but this feature isn't perfect either. It's probably one of the best tax preparation software suites out there, but in the end, it's still tax preparation software and you need to use it with caution. Just don't rush through them hoping to get them done until next year. Take the time to get them right now and you shouldn't have any worries. Hurry through and make a lot of mistakes and they'll be looking for you.

You could buy software with more bells and whistles than TaxAct, but I doubt you'll need those bells and whistles that come along with the more expense tax programs. Now if your average your tax returns, then you may need some of these high end programs. For the average joe, TaxAct is plenty for filling out the simple form and sending it in.

And let's face it, most people today use the 1040EZ because they don't want to worry about itemizing and all that other headache. They don't know how much money they're losing. Because if they did, they'd use an easy to use software program like taxact to get back every single cent that was due to them. But they figure it's a hassle and they're only losing a couple hundred bucks so what's the big deal? Some people are just lazy and wouldn't go to the trouble or expense even if you could show them they were losing thousands of dollars. I think this is what the government hopes.
