Are Shiatsu Pillows Powerful?
You might be one of the many people who have attempted to perform massage therapy at home with something like a low cost Hitachi magic wand massager. People have mixed motivations for going about this alone, from trying to save money from professional services or as a long term treatment for chronic back pain. Consumers have a wide array of massaging products to choose from that come in the form of cushions, handheld devices and even ottomans (in the case of foot massagers).
One product that many consumers tend to be skeptical about is the shiatsu pillow. From the outside, these devices look like ordinary lumbar support pillows. However, once you plug them in and get them going, you will be surprised at how much you underestimated this small device. Shiatus pillows contain hidden shiatsu heads underneath that rotate for unparalleled kneading action. In some models, these heads are also capable of other motions such as rolling. Depending on how deep of a massage you want, these pillows are available in configurations with up to four shiatsu heads. You would need to install various aftermarket Hitachi magic wand massager attachments on your handheld massager to even bring it close in performance to a shiatsu pillow.
Setup couldn’t be any easier. Your first task is finding an adequate seating surface. Ideally, you want something that you can rest your back against while your feet remain firmly planted against the ground. This will allow you to exert some additional pressure against the pillow for a more firm massage. If you choose to operate the pillow from your couch, you may have trouble keeping it in place. They are designed to be strapped down such that they don’t fall over during use, effectively ending the massage.
Once the pillow is firmly situated, it comes down to selecting the appropriate pre-programmed mode and allowing the massager to get to work. Usually you can configure the massage mode from a handheld remote, although some units may have a control panel located on the pillow itself. Since shiatsu pillows have such a small form factor, many people have been able to modify them for use as a shoulder and neck massaging apparatus. You may have to get creative with latching the device down, but it should be more than adequate for these tasks.
Compared to the cost of other massage therapy products, like a massage cushion, the shiatsu pillow is relatively inexpensive. A quality unit will run you under $50 but the relief you should get will indicate otherwise. If anything, it will prove that the small size of the shiatsu pillow is in no way reflective of its massaging potential.
