Database Management Software Drives The Internet
Databases are an integral component to the functioning of the Internet. A database is a grouping of data that is saved in a format that a computer can read. Database management software manages how the data is written to disk and how it can be retrieved. There are several categories of data models, including relational, object-relational, hierarchical, flat data or network models. These models can be used to distinguish different types of management software.
Database management software first appeared in the business world over forty years ago. It came into being after direct access devices were developed, supplanting data storage on magnetic tape or punch cards which had to be read sequentially. The development of the hard drive led to the necessity to be able to catalog information through a database.
Today the relational model is most commonly used in which all information is presented in tables. A university database table of student information, therefore, would include a row for each student with columns for his name, address, phone number, and other pertinent information. Each row of the table would list this same information in the appropriate columns about a different student.
An intelligent engineer should choose to create each system such that it is made for the task at hand, and using the available business resources that he has to use. They will also need to set up and test the systems, and be available to troubleshoot any issues that arise along the way. Another key responsibility is to choose the access levels that individual users or groups of users will have to the data, and what those users can actually do to the data.
When data management design is underway it is vital to consider strategies for data backup. Making copies of the data tables should be done automatically at scheduled intervals. In a transparent system, the key data is stored in many different locations, that may not even by physically in the same area. This plan makes complete data loss almost an impossibility.
One of the key concepts in data management is data security. The data manager has the power to selectively allow access to information either per user, or per group, and a group policy permits an easier access policy to large numbers of people simultaneously.
Integral components to the functioning of the Internet are databases. The first database management software was developed in over 40 years ago. They were first designed because new direct access devices made them possible. Before that data was stored in magnetic tape or punched cards and they had to be processed serially. By far, the most common database design in use today is known as the relational model. All of the data is stored in data tables. The person behind any given data management system is an engineer. It is very important to think about backup strategies when designing the data management systems.
