Basic fashion tips
Your relationship with fashion is defined by three major factors. Your aim is to learn how to make these factors work together in your favor so that you look as good as you can. One element in this triangle is your body (as it is now, not ‘when I was 20’ or ‘after a diet’). Another element is what you want people to understand about you from the way you dress and your jewelry accessories. The third is what clothes are available – which includes your budget and shopping opportunities.
Learn which garments and accessories flatter your body- and face-shape, and look for these or their close equivalents in any new season’s ranges. (There are a limited number of possible clothes which can be comfortably worn on the human body and so you will always find some part of the current trend which suits you!) Choose those colors in vogue which enhance your own natural coloring. Seek out and invest in a few good-quality fundamentals which make you look and feel good, and which will team up happily with more ephemeral purchases. A couple of different handbags to choose from will round out your wardrobe nicely.
Think about your personality, your work and leisure environments, and what you want people to assume about you when they look at you. Look at people around you and notice the assumptions you make about them based on how they are dressed. Imagine them in different clothes and see how your view of the personality changes.
Choose clothes which will work together. Team them up. If you choose items which suit you according to the above guidelines, you’ll find unexpected outfits emerging with minimal effort. Don’t hold on to clothes which don’t earn their way in your wardrobe. If you don’t or can’t wear it, get rid of it to someone who will – via a thrift shop or recycling if necessary!
